Links to genealogy sites

Some websites have helped me in my search for my ancestors. However, this requires that you have already gathered comprehensive information from your relatives, parents and grandparents and know the names, dates and places associated with your ancestors. These links can be very helpful afterwards.

Here you can find out where your family name occurs most frequently in Germany: www.geogen.de.

Here you can have DNA tests done and learn more about your own indigenous people: iGENEA DNA Genealogy

Under www.wolhynien.de you can find out about the history of Volhynia. There is also a forum where other family researchers meet. There you can ask questions about your ancestors, but if possible with precise information.

The pages of the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe, also known as SGGEE, deal with German ancestors from Poland and Volhynia, mostly Lutherans. The database and most of the maps can only be accessed if you become a member of the society. Click here to go to SGGEE.

This was a pilot project of the Mormons. Old church books were filmed here. At the SGGEE you can choose the corresponding film number. Unfortunately it is no longer available.

In the Odessa database you can find the address www.odessa3org/search search for your ancestors yourself. The website is written in English. Under "War records" you can find the data of Russian Germans who were naturalized in Germany towards the end of World War II. Some were deported back to Russia. Under "St. Petersburg Archive" you can find birth, death and marriage lists from Volhynia. The same lists are also available under www.rootsweb.com.

In the Federal Archives There are a number of useful opportunities for genealogical research in Berlin and Koblenz. In Berlin, the naturalization applications of all Russian Germans who fled to Germany during World War II are kept. It is possible to find them and have them copied in the Federal Archives. In Koblenz, the family tree information and family tree records of the Volhynians from the same period are kept. Very valuable information can also be found here.

In Poland there are various possibilities for genealogical research. A lot of progress has been made there. If you have ancestors from the greater Poznan area, I can only recommend Poznan Project recommend. Genealogical research throughout Poland can be carried out at Genetics operate.

Under chort.square7.ch There is a German-language site for the Mennonite colony of Chortitza. You can read about the history of Chortitza, look at maps of the villages and find some historical lists. However, this is not a database. Information about the Molotschna colony is now also available.
Lists of landowners in Chortitza can be found at www.mennonites.ca. In many cases the landowner is also the person who emigrated from West Prussia to Ukraine.

Then you can go to the Molotschna school lists search for his ancestors on the English website www.mennonitegenealogy.com.
Names of Mennonites in West Prussia from 1776 can be found under www.mennonitegealogy.com.prussia from the time before emigration to Russia.

Here you will find the Mennonite DNA Project with many people tested (English).

Some church records from West Prussia can be found in the Mennonite Research Center at Weierhof, Bolanden, Rhineland-Palatinate.

The English website genforum.genealogy.com/my/ has various forums organized by family name, where you can leave messages and hope that distant relatives in North America will read them and respond.
Here you can find lists of victims of communism in Russian: www.Memorial.ru
